What do you think of when someone says the word ‘art’? Most people would say… ‘something that goes on the wall’. That’s the problem a couple of Adelaide textile artists had when they wanted to put their textile art into Adelaide art galleries, 20 years ago. Most of the galleries either weren’t that interested, or only had wall space to offer — not suitable for scarves, shawls and wearable art at all!
It took two artist friends, one good idea, tons of passion and 12 months of very hard work to bring together a group of artists — textile artists and others — to form T’Arts Collective — which stands for Textile & Arts Collective. That was back in 2003.
We’re a not-for-profit organisation managed and operated by our members. All the members of T’Arts Collective are working artists, mostly from Adelaide who exhibit in our gallery and also take turns in being in the shop for a day.
The gallery shop in Gay’s Arcade is the perfect space to showcase our collective’s work. Everywhere you turn, there are beautiful pieces of art, and with so many disciplines represented, we think that the chances of you finding something you love are very high.
That’s twenty-one remarkable years of both artistic quality and commercial success, growing in strength over the decades. Watch a short video taken 3 March 2024 when about a hundred active and former members joined with valued clientele at the celebration to mark this significant milestone. Among founders and current members, Joy Harvey-Textile Artist, a former Collective member, talked about what it means to be a T’Art, and Nicola Spurrier, the Chief Public Health Officer of South Australia, gave an inspiring speech on the importance of art for health and well-being.
